CAMPUS SUMMARY
Mayland Community College is located in the Blue Ridge section of the Appalachian mountains of Western North Carolina on the Avery/Mitchell county line. Mayland is chartered to serve Mitchell, Avery, and Yancey counties (hence the name Mayland) and does so by offering classes on our main campus in Spruce Pine and at satellite campuses in Newland and Burnsville, NC. Mayland also offers distance education courses via RAVEN our Regional Audio/Video Education Network. RAVEN classes are available via the Internet, through telecourses, or seated class sessions on the North Carolina Information Highway. The Mayland Campus is a wireless community thanks to a generous gift fromthe Phillips family.
Mayland also operates the Phillips-Gwaltney Child Development center a five-star state-rated facility located on the main campus in Spruce Pine. Since the opening of Mayland Technical Institute in 1971, the college has successfully grown in size and offerings to now serve over 8,000 persons each year through our educational programs.

UNIQUE/SPECIAL PROGRAMS
Mayland Community College awards associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates in over 30 programs. As an institute of higher learning, the College strongly promotes learning through technology by offering classes via the Regional Audio Video Education Network (RAVEN), where students can study via the Internet, by videocassette, independent study or through videoconferencing in one of our North Carolina Information Highway classrooms available at all three campus locations. MCC also offers dual enrollment courses for select high-school students, which allows students to take college classes and earn credit, while still in high school. Mayland‘s Continuing Education department provides a wide variety of classes, from workforce development to recreational activities. MCC’s Small Business Center and Human Resource Development departments offer economic development, training and information sessions to small businesses, entrepreneurs, or those seeking to upgrade their job skills. A specialized collection of materials pertaining to genealogy and regional history can be found in the “Appalachian Room” located on the Main Campus in Spruce Pine.
