| CAMPUS SUMMARY |
 |
The North Carolina School of the Arts is recognized throughout the world as an exceptional training ground for young artists. Opened in 1965 as the first state-assisted residential conservatory in the nation, it has offered students in all the performing and visual arts an educational experience designed to best develop talent, vision, and professional excellence. The school offers programs at the secondary and baccalaureate levels in dance, design and production, drama, filmmaking and music, and at the master's level in design and production, filmmaking and music. The school is the only state institution that is dedicated entirely to the professional training of students who possess exceptional talent in the performing arts.
The campus is on 67 wooded acres near Old Salem, a national tourist attraction. There are eight residence halls, an on-campus student complex of 23 four-bedroom apartments, and Centre Stage Apartments for students eligible for lease agreements. The school's performance facilities include: the 1,380-seat Stevens Center, a neoclassical house for dance, opera, and orchestra performances; the 380-seat Proscenium Thrust, the Patrons Theatre, a 100 seat arena theatre, and the 200-seat flexible Catawba Theatre of Performance Place, for drama; Agnes de Mille Theatre for dance, and the Judy and Bill Watson 300 seat Chamber Music Hall, Crawford Hall, and Recital Hall, for music events. Winston-Salem, located in Forsyth County, is part of the Piedmont Triad, an area that also encompasses Greensboro to the east and High Point to the south. |

| UNIQUE/SPECIAL PROGRAMS |
 |
While courses are offered that give students an historic perspective and context in each of the arts disciplines, the primary emphasis in all programs is on performance and production. The school strives to foster an environment akin to that of an artistic colony where students are encouraged to develop their artistic abilities to the fullest. For young artists, there is no substitute for developing skills in front of an audience. Students take part in hundreds of productions and screenings each year, in the school's facilities, as well as touring performances across the state, in major U.S. cities, and in Europe. Graduates emerge ready for professional careers, because they have been on stage, backstage, and on location, all through their training. |
