CAMPUS SUMMARY
Western Carolina University was founded in August 1889 as a semi-public school aimed at teacher training. From humble beginnings as Cullowhee High School, Western has grown to be a campus situated on over 600 acres of land and serving over 8,800 students. Western Carolina University seeks to provide an environment in which students, faculty, and staff jointly assume responsibility for learning, where free exchange of ideas, intellectual challenge, and high standards of scholarship prevail.

Located in the Great Smoky Mountains, Western is in a prime location for outdoor activities. The Tuckasegee River ripples through campus and the annual river clean-up serves as one of the biggest community-service projects for the university and surrounding community each year. Western pairs scholastics with the outdoors and provides an excellent learning experience in a unique setting.

UNIQUE/SPECIAL PROGRAMS
Western Carolina University has always been a trend-setter at establishing new and exciting programs. Western had the first residential Honors College in NC and that tradition continues on today with over 1,300 students enrolled in our Honors program. Western is also home to the first Emergency Management program in the nation. The 4 most popular majors at Western are Criminal Justice, Construction Management, Elementary Education, and Nursing. Western has a new 4-year Forensic Science program. An integral part of this program will be the nation’s second body farm located on a university campus. Students will have the opportunity to be part of our exciting new CSI: Cullowhee program. This Fall also marked the beginning of our 4-year Television and Motion Picture Productions program. Students will be instructed on the fine art of film and television show creation and will learn how to communicate stories on screen from our talented faculty, including Emmy Award Winner, Jack Sholder. This is just a sampling of many of the over 120 academic programs that are available at Western Carolina University.
