| CAMPUS SUMMARY |
 |
Duke University's roots trace back to a one-room log building in 1838. The university became Duke in 1924, when tobacco magnate James B Duke endowed tiny Trinity College, a Methodist-affiliated school in Durham, North Carolina, to honor his father. The founding indenture of Duke University directed the members of the university to develop our resources, increase our wisdom, and promote human happiness.
The campus is widely held to be one of the most striking college campuses in the nation and was designed by Julian Abele, an African-American architect of the Philadelphia firm of Horace Trumbauer.
Duke stretches over 9,350 green and forested acres and features red-brick Georgian and contemporary glass-and-chrome architecture, as well as inspiring, neo-gothic stone buildings. |

| UNIQUE/SPECIAL PROGRAMS |
 |
Duke undergraduates enroll in either Trinity College of Arts and Sciences, where they can earn a BA or a BS degree in more than 35 major programs or a self-designed curriculum, called Program II, or the Pratt School of Engineering. If they choose the latter, they may pursue a BS Biomedical, Civil, or Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. The school emphasizes study in the liberal arts and sciences as well as professional study. Engineering students take about 55 percent of their classes in Trinity College.
Many first-year students take advantage of the opportunity to learn in small groups through the FOCUS program and first-year seminars. FOCUS students zero in on interdisciplinary issues such as The Arts in Contemporary Society or Health Care and Society. FOCUS students generally live together in dorms also mixed with non-FOCUS students and study under top professors in classes capped at 17 students each. During their undergraduate years, more than 40 percent of Duke's undergraduates choose to study abroad in one of more than 200 programs. |
