Admission Policies
Mountain State University maintains an open-door admission policy. Applicants who are graduates of an accredited secondary high school or who have received a General Education Development (GED) certificate are eligible to apply.
Admission is also open to special students not seeking degrees and to high school students who have permission from their high school to take college courses before graduation.
Individuals may be eligible for credits upon admission by documenting their mastery of college-level subject matter through successful completion of Advanced Placement Examinations (AP), College Level Examination Program (CLEP), Dantes, Institutional Challenge Exams, or assessment of prior learning.
Mountain State University reserves the right to evaluate special cases and consider applicants who do not meet the usual criteria for admissions but who, in the opinion of MSU, are able to benefit from instruction at MSU.
Application
All applicants planning to take courses for college credit need to submit the following documents to the admissions processing office:
- a completed application for admission to Mountain State University
- an official high school transcript or a GED certificate
- an official transcript of all college courses
If the above items are missing, the student's admission file is considered incomplete. Students with an incomplete file will not be permitted to register for subsequent semesters or receive financial aid.
Placement
Although there is no minimum ACT score required for admission, an official ACT score is recommended for assessment and placement purposes. Any new student who does not have an official ACT score will be placed in beginning math and English courses.
Certain programs at Mountain State University may require students to meet additional admission requirements. Applicants for selected curricula or courses may be required to have minimum ACT (or SAT I) scores, take placement tests, or demonstrate other competencies as specified by each degree program.
Admission to Selected Enrollment Programs
Limited enrollment programs may have admission requirements specific to the respective program in addition to the general MSU admission requirements. Selection of students for limited enrollment programs will be made by the individual program's admissions committee and will be based on criteria published by each program. These criteria are available from the Office of Admissions.
Admission of Special or Part-time Students
Students who are not pursuing a degree or students who wish to enroll on a part-time basis need to comply with regular admissions requirements. Part-time students who desire to become full-time degree-seeking students must submit a written request to the Student Services Office specifying the desired degree program.
Admission by Transfer
Mountain State University welcomes applications for admission from students who wish to transfer from other regionally accredited institutions of higher learning. Transfer students are to forward an application for admission and all previous college official transcripts to the MSU admissions office. Credit will only be accepted for courses completed with a grade of
C or better. Transfer credits will be evaluated by the Student Services Office to determine which courses will transfer as equivalent MSU courses. Once this evaluation is complete the student should meet with his/her assigned advisor to determine how the transfer credits will apply toward his/her degree program.
Any transfer student on probation from another college or university will retain probationary status at Mountain State University until he/she meets MSU requirements under academic probation. Any student on suspension from another college or university will not be accepted at MSU until the period of suspension has been completed. However, students may, under extenuating circumstances, petition the dean of student services for special admission consideration.
Readmission
Former students who wish to return after two years are asked to reapply to the university. All returning students will follow the degree or certificate requirements as outlined in the most current college catalog.
