CAMPUS SUMMARY
New York City Technical College (City Tech) is the senior technical college of the City University of New York, the largest urban university in the country. For more than fifty years, City Tech has been a national model for urban technical education.

In January 27, 1999, inaugural remarks, President Fred W. Beaufait reminded faculty and staff that we live in fiercely competitive times and that the future success of the college will depend on lifting New York City Technical College to "new heights" and on completing its transition from its community college origins to a premiere institution of higher learning within the CUNY senior college system.

To these ends, President Beaufait has launched the college into a new strategic plan that will see the creation of perhaps as many as fifteen new baccalaureate programs over the next four years, connecting each of the college’s associate degrees to an appropriate baccalaureate program and to the expansion of the role of technology in the conduct of education itself. This will facilitate distance and asynchronous learning, allowing working students to take advantage of all of the resources of the college in ways not currently available to them. It will be a major step toward meeting the needs of perpetual learners, at a public college tuition sure to be attractive to both students and their employers.

City Tech is in the area described as “the renaissance of downtown Brooklyn,” the exciting MetroTech Center at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge. At the hub of subway and bus lines, City Tech is well connected to all parts of New York City.

More important, though, is City Tech’s connection to business, industry and government institutions. These connections keep City Tech academic programs at the cutting edge, allowing students to prepare for the careers of the future. Many faculty are recruited directly from business and industry. They work side-by-side with students in classrooms and laboratories. State of the art equipment and state of the art instruction create an incomparable education. Internships and collaborative research opportunities are widely available. These connections and experiences give students an important head start in their careers. Fully accredited programs provide students with extremely valuable credentials.

City Tech offers a full array of student services, including multicultural student activities, child care, counseling and career services. Students have access to an outstanding library, tutoring services, computer-based academic support through the several college learning centers, and literally hundreds of computers in both the learning centers and open labs.

City Tech is an innovator, in its exciting teaching, in its anticipation of the direction of our economy and our society and in the exceptional out-of-class experiences provided to students. In the Information Age, where knowledge is power, City Tech provides an especially powerful education to its approximately 11,000 students in degree programs and the 14,000 students with whom it has contact each year through its Division of Continuing Education.

UNIQUE/SPECIAL PROGRAMS
City Tech’s forty degree programs include twelve baccalaureate programs (Communication Design, Computer Systems, Electromechanical Engineering Technology, Facilities Management, Graphic Arts Production Management, Hospitality Management, Human Services, Legal Assistant Studies, Occupational Teacher Education, Stage Technology, Technology Teacher Education and Telecommunications Technology). Associate degrees fall into a number of broad categories: arts and entertainment technologies, hospitality and business, public services, computer technologies, architecture and engineering technologies, health-related fields, liberal arts and sciences.

Many of these programs are unique to City Tech, or hard to find elsewhere in the metro NYC area. The 2,000 students in Computer Systems areas are part of the largest such program in the state. Students in Hospitality Management regularly win national and international competitions; the program has produced some of the leading chefs in the City. But most importantly, the hands-on teaching at City Tech, which blends the practical and theoretical, provides an unbeatable entry into the technology careers of the 21st Century.
